Srisailam - a unique combination of forest sanctuary and pilgrimage town, makes a refreshing weekend break from Hyderabad. The River Krishna carves a deep gorge through the woods of the Nallamalai Hills, and leaves in its wake a lush forest that is home to India's largest tiger reserve. The reserve is huge - 3568 sq km - spread over five districts in Andhra Pradesh.
Nagarjuna Sagar Dam - an erstwhile prominent Buddhist center, is the most attractive tourist spot in Andhra Pradesh. Named after the Buddhist monk, Acharya Nagarjuna, it is today the major hydel power station in Andhra Pradesh. It is the tallest masonry dam in the World, constructed on the river Krishna. Nagarjuna Sagar dam is located on the border of Guntur - Nalgonda districts. The dam was completed in 1966 and it is 124 metres high and 1 km long. It is built across the river Krishna and has one of the largest networks of canal systems irrigating over 2,000,000 acres of land in Guntur, Prakasam, Nalgonda, Khammam and Krishna districts. 4 kms away from the dam, is the viewpoint, where a panoramic view of the amazing landscape, is simply a feast to the eyes. One can find the image of Nagarjuna, on a pylon not too far from the dam.
The Lake - The lake near the dam is the third largest artificial lake in the world. It is located 4-km away from the dam. This dam provides some exotic views of the outstandingly beautiful landscape. Here you can also see an idol of Lord Nagarjuna, placed on a tower, very near to the dam.
Other Attractions -
Apart form the lake, there are many other attractions around the Nagarjuna Sagar like Ethipothala waterfalls, and the densely forested Srisailam Wildlife Reserve. There is also the famous Buddhist relics and an exquisite museum, located just a 20-minute ride away by a motorboat across the river Krishna. The dam offers some eye pleasing views during attracting innumerable tourists to take a trip to the dams. |
